BPD 2024 End of the Year Update

2024 BPD YEAR END UPDATE:

🌐 The Governor’s Vision: Transforming the CNMI into a Digital Powerhouse

The CNMI ends 2024 on the cusp of a digital revolution. With over $200 million being invested in foundational digital infrastructure, this ambitious vision is laying the groundwork for a thriving digital economy. This is more than a plan—it’s a transformative leap into the future.

The strategy is simple yet profound: connect, innovate, and grow. By building the tools necessary for a unified and highly advanced digital system, we are not just improving connectivity—we’re redefining possibilities.

This vision sets the stage for enhanced global connectivity, fosters local innovation, and drives economic prosperity. Every dollar invested is a step toward creating a dynamic ecosystem where businesses thrive, residents benefit, and the CNMI emerges as a digital hub for Asia and the Pacific.

Through meticulous planning and effective execution, CNMI is evolving into a leader in the digital economy—an economy that will empower communities and sustain growth for generations to come.

🏛 BPD: 2024 Broadband Expansion Milestones

The CNMI Broadband Policy and Development Office (BPD) is setting the pace for broadband innovation. The Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program has officially crossed a monumental threshold—completion of all planning phases. With approval from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), CNMI is now primed to launch the sub-grant process, ushering in the next chapter of digital transformation.

But what does this mean for you?

Starting Q3 of 2025, the deployment of underground fiber optic cables will begin, connecting every home and business in the CNMI to cutting-edge broadband infrastructure. This ambitious project is expected to reach full deployment within just four years, revolutionizing island-wide connectivity.

Being one of the first in the nation to achieve these BEAD milestones speaks volumes about CNMI’s commitment to advancing digital equity and access. For residents, this will mean faster internet speeds, more reliable connections, and a future where digital opportunities are limitless.

By making broadband accessible to all, CNMI is laying the groundwork for economic growth, educational advancements, and innovation-driven industries. The future is closer than you think.

💼 Unlocking New Opportunities: Grant Successes Driving CNMI’s Digital Future

Aside from the $81M BEAD grant, BPD has secured additional key grants that will transform connectivity and digital equity for all residents.

Starting January 2025, the Digital Equity Capacity Grant will launch with the maximum allocation of $2.1 million. These funds will support critical Digital Equity (DE) projects aimed at bridging the digital divide, ensuring access to resources, and empowering underserved communities.

Additionally, the USDA Broadband Technical Assistance Grant has awarded $500,000 to the Broadband Policy and Development (BPD) Office. These funds will enhance technical capacity and expedite environmental permitting processes, paving the way for seamless broadband infrastructure development.

And there’s more to come: CNMI anticipates receiving the maximum $2.5 million from the Digital Equity Competitive Grant in early 2025. These additional funds will complement the DE Capacity Grant, enabling even more impactful projects that prioritize inclusivity, accessibility, and digital empowerment.

These achievements mark major strides in shaping a more connected and equitable future for CNMI residents.

🚀 Shaping the Future: Governor’s Broadband Bootcamp Launches in 2025

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is taking bold strides toward building a digitally empowered workforce. In January 2025, the Governor’s Broadband Bootcamp will officially launch, spearheading advanced digital skills training for CNMI residents. This groundbreaking program is managed by Northern Marianas College (NMC) with support from the Department of Labor (DOL), NMTech and Island Training Solutions (ITS).

Over a rigorous four-month period, 300 selected trainees will dive deep into specialized broadband and digital technology training. To support participants, the program includes a $6,000 living stipend, ensuring accessibility and financial relief for those taking part. The goal? To equip CNMI’s workforce with cutting-edge tech knowledge while providing immediate practical benefits.

This initiative is more than a training program—it’s a building block for a future-ready CNMI. By fostering digital literacy and career-readiness, the Broadband Bootcamp aims to empower the local community, create job opportunities, and strengthen CNMI’s competitiveness in a growing digital economy.

🌎 Building a Digital Bridge: Submarine Cables and Global Connectivity

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) is forging a path to become a global leader in digital connectivity. A key partnership with Google has secured CNMI’s inclusion in the Pacific Connect Initiative Submarine Cable system, marking a groundbreaking step in connecting the islands to the rest of the world with ultra-fast, reliable internet.

This partnership is just the beginning. As part of the initiative, plans are underway to develop a hyperscale data center on the island of Tinian—a critical hub for storing and managing global digital data. This state-of-the-art facility will be supported by four submarine cable landings, providing unparalleled infrastructure for data flow and connectivity. Beach infrastructure for the cables is already being deployed, with the first landing scheduled for Q3 2025.

What does this mean for CNMI?

The region will become a strategic player in the global internet economy, attracting new businesses, investments, and opportunities.

Residents and businesses alike will have access to faster, more reliable connectivity, enabling innovation and growth.

The CNMI will stand as a model for digital transformation in the Pacific, forging a future where data connections unlock limitless possibilities.

The investment—totaling nearly $100M—is not just about technology; it’s about creating a foundation for a thriving digital economy.

💼 Building a Stronger Economy Through Digital Transformation

The CNMI’s digital revolution isn’t just about technology—it’s about opportunity and resilience.

With over $200 million in foundational infrastructure projects underway, the region is poised to experience a surge in job creation. From construction to high-tech roles, these initiatives are generating employment opportunities that will stimulate local economies and provide immediate benefits to residents.

But the impact doesn’t stop there. Transitioning to a diverse digital economy will reduce reliance on traditional industries like tourism. This diversification strengthens the CNMI’s economic resilience, making it less vulnerable to external market shifts.

Improved connectivity is another game-changer. Not only will it attract local and international investors, but it also opens doors for enhanced educational resources and better access to global markets. For tourism, reliable high-speed internet enhances the visitor experience, making the CNMI a top destination for digital nomads and remote workers.

The economic benefits of these developments are far-reaching. They’re not just shaping the future—they’re creating new opportunities for all.
